Historically, Bhutan was a tiny medieval country isolated by natural barriers to the north and south and politically divided by regional factions. Under the blessed guidance of the Wangchuck dynasty, she has emerged as a peaceful and united country. Through out her history, Bhutan’s traditions and rich cultural heritage, which have been safe-guarded by the visionary Monarchs from the Golden Throne, have been the central pillar of her unity and strength.

In 2008, Bhutan became the world’s youngest democracy. Significantly, democracy Bhutan came about not by popular demand, but was conferred on the people by His Majesty the King. Bhutan is the only nation in the world where the happiness of the people, Gross National Happiness (GNH), is prioritized over material development or Gross Domestic Product (GDP). 

Bhutan opened her doors to the world in the 1970s. Every year, thousands of people from all over the world visit this ‘Shangri-La‘ and fall under her spell. When they leave, they do so half-heartedly, but with memories aplenty and a yearning to return soon.
